Located at milepost 331 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mitchell County is between Asheville, NC and Boone, NC. Founded in 1861, Mitchell County is named after Elijah Mitchell, the man who determined nearby Mount Mitchell to be the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Once an isolated county known for furniture and textiles, improved roads and the loss of factory jobs has lead the county to rely on its most important resources, the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the determination and hospitality of its people. Another little known secret is the quartz here is the purest known in the world and is used in every computer chip in the world. |

The historic district of Spruce Pine is a cute small town with two main streets of antique shops and restaurants. You’ll hear the locals refer to Oak and Locust Streets as Upper and Lower Streets. You’ll find such places as Moose Crossing & Co. and Mountainside Wine on Upper Street, and a favorite of Lower Street is always DT’s Blue Ridge Java where you’ll find not only coffee but great food and ice-cream as well. |
